First Annual Relay for Life

On Friday, St. Francis Xavier hosted its first ever Relay for Life Event supporting the Canadian Cancer Society. The original goal of $25,000 presented to students at the Relay for Life Rally in April was quickly surpassed. The event raised over $48,000!! These donations help support cancer patients and their families through the life-changing diagnosis and the pain, worry and fear that comes with it. Fundraising events such as Relay for Life also enable research that can make groundbreaking advances in cancer treatment and save lives.

A committee made up of students and staff worked extremely hard to plan this event where team members are taking turns walking around the track between noon and 9 pm. While a variety of activities, including Water Games, an 80s Dance Party and a Snapchat Scavenger Hunt “Searching for a Cure” took place, each team had at least one member on the track at all times to signify that cancer never sleeps. On and off the track, there was always something to do at this Beached Themed event. Luminaries, which are candles that are placed in special bags that bear the names of cancer survivors and loved one who lost their battle with cancer, were designed and lit during a twilight ceremony, providing light and inspiration to all the participants. A job well done Coyotes!!
