Indigenous Awareness Week

This past week at St. Francis Xavier was Indigenous Awareness Week, where both staff and students were given opportunities to learn more about the Indigenous groups that make up Canada. We began the week with the land acknowledgement and the school community was able to listen to Oh Canada sung in Cree, Ojibwe and Inuktitut. Homerooms also competed in trivia to see who knew the most about a variety of topics (Indian Act, residential schools, art, etc).

7&8 students had the opportunity to listen to Twin Flames, an international, award winning Indigenous duo who spoke to the students about being proud of one’s background, setting dreams and respecting all of Creation. On Thursday, selected students from grades 7-12 took part in the Blanket Exercise. The Blanket Exercise in an interactive lesson where students get to see the impact of government policies on Indigenous groups put into action. Students were then treated to some delicious Three Sisters Soup courtesy of the Hospitality Program.
